Vinyl Wednesday: Waylon Jennings

Black on Black, 1982

Iconic outlaw country crooner Waylon Jennings put out a ton of albums in his day. We're talking over 30 records from 1964-1998. Black on Black was released on RCA Victor in 1982.  Though it gets a lot of criticism for being over-produced and not true to Waylon's more raw sound - it does feature some great tunes like covers of Hank Williams "Honky Tonk Blues" and Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues", as well as collaborations with Willie Nelson on "Just to Satisfy You" and backing vocals by his wife and fellow country music star, Jessi Colter. No Waylon collection is complete without it, and it's available now!

Vinyl Wednesday: Brewer & Shipley

Tarkio, 1970

Released in 1970 on Kama Sutra Records, Tarkio is the third album from midwest bred American folk rock duo, Brewer & Shipley. The album is named after a small town in Missouri that the duo played regularly on their circuit of college gigs. It features the bands biggest hit "One Toke Over The Line", which peaked at #10 on the Billboard charts, as well as a cameo from the one and only Jerry Garcia playing a steel guitar intro on "Oh Mommy". The duo is best known for their socially charged lyrics that reflected the sentiment of the youth movement of the late 60's & early 70's - especially surrounding the Vietnam War and finding personal and political freedom.

Vinyl Wednesday: Dust

Hard Attack

The second and final release of American three piece rock outfit, Dust, Hard Attack really packs a punch. Released on Karma Sutra Records in 1971, it was a quick follow up album to the band's self titled debut the year before. The album cover features art by renowned american fantasy artist, Frank Frazetta. Though the band didn't achieve much success at the time, drummer Marc Bell AKA Marky Ramone later found fame as the drummer for iconic punk band, The Ramones. Dust guitar player Richie Wise also went on to produce big name rock acts like KISS. This notoriety later sparked interest in Dust with vinyl collectors and rock enthusiasts. Check out the first track on the record Pull Away / So Many Times in the video below!

Vinyl Wednesday: Hawkwind

Space Ritual

The fourth album by UK psych rock band Hawkwind, notoriously cited as Lemmy of Motorhead's first band, Space Ritual is a two disc set recorded from live shows in Liverpool and London while the band toured to promote their previous album, Doremi Fasol Latido.  The show was a full on audio-visual experience with dancers, bubbles, and a liquid light show to evoke feelings of traveling through time and space. The double album features a good portion of the album they were touring to promote mixed with a previously unreleased tracks, all woven together with electronic and spoken performances, making Space Ritual one continuous piece. While you may not get the full experience of what the show was like, play this album loud with candles throwing light on your ceiling and you'll be on a journey through space and time too. Take a trip with Hawkwind!
